EAST MANATEE -- Hangin' in the Hammock, a Florida songwriter festival, promises to help usher in the new year on a mellow, tropical note.
The festival is set for 11 a.m. to dusk Sunday at Linger Lodge Restaurant and Campground, 7205 85th St. Court E.
"We will be singing songs about Florida, the Gulf Coast and the islands," said singer-songwriter John Frinzi of Lakeland. "Everyone is an artist in their own right, but we have played together as well."
Frenzi opens the bill at 11 a.m., to be followed by Jimi Pappas, James White, Charlie DeCosa, Jim Morris and steel drum musician John Patti of Bradenton.
Also sitting in throughout the day will be violinist Emily Rundle of Washington, D.C.
At about 5 p.m., all the artists will play a final set together.
"Each artist will do two sets throughout the day," Frinzi said.
All of the performers have played around the nation, from Las Vegas to California to Key West. Listeners of Sirius' Margaritaville Radio channel may recognize many of them.
James "Sunny Jim" White of Sarasota said each of the musicians is a well-established, full-time professional who is comfortable with playing the "trop-rock" genre.
"It ranges from country rock to some rock 'n' roll," White said. "It will be a fun listening time. You'll hear the cream of the crop."
As an example, White said that Morris recently returned with a fan group from a trip to Tahiti.
"We have a lot of history of playing in tropical destinations," he said.
Linger Lodge hosts three or four musical events a year, general manager David LaRusso said.
In November, Linger Lodge hosted a bluegrass festival and gumbo cookoff.
"This is the first time we have had the Florida songwriter festival. This will be more like island music," LaRusso said.
The fest will be held on The Point, a large grassy area behind the restaurant, said Linger Lodge's Barbara Blanchette.
Also planned is a book-signing by Tom Corcoran, author of South Florida-related mysteries.
Motorworks Brewery of Bradenton will offer its local brews. Food and drink will be available inside the restaurant and also on the grounds of The Point.
Margaritaville Radio will emcee.
Tickets are $25 and are available in advance by calling Linger Lodge at 941-755-2757, or at the gate the day of the concert.
