A death investigation is underway after a man reportedly overdosed on methamphetamine at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the 12000 block of Mobley Pond Lane in Myakka City after receiving reports a man was passed out in his truck on the property of Dankin Dairy.
A deputy reportedly found the man about 100 yards from his truck on the ground. Emergency medical services and Myakka Fire Department personnel responded to assist.
The man was in a delusional and erratic state as if under the influence of narcotics, according to the report. While officials were trying to render medical treatment, the man grabbed a broken fence pole and started swinging it at the deputy and EMS personnel.
All three responders took action to get him on the ground and restrained with handcuffs. A short while later, EMS personnel assisting the man reported he became unconscious. EMS immediately started life-saving procedures and transported him to Lakewood Ranch Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim was later identified as Byron S. Crosby, 48.
In the course of the investigation, deputies reportedly learned the man used large quantities of methamphetamine the night before. Preliminary cause of death is believed to be an overdose.
