A space-themed school bus headed for Astro Skate Family Fun Center was sideswiped Friday afternoon by a tractor-trailer vehicle carrier on southbound U.S. 301 near 13th Avenue.
The bus service for the skating rink, 3611 Third St. W., was carrying about 40 children and six adults, including the bus driver. No one was injured.
“Trailers, they sway,” the driver said. “An unavoidable incident.”
The Astro Skate bus was in the far right lane of U.S. 301 while the tractor-trailer in the middle lane drifted into the bus’s lane. The tractor-trailer driver of Miami’s Membry Auto Transport, transporting four mid-size vehicles, said he was traveling from south Florida.
No crash report was submitted, but the drivers exchanged information.
Emergency Medical Services and Florida Highway Patrol deputies responded as the children disembarked from the bus and lined up along the white fence bordering the 13th Ave Youth Center and Park.
When it was announced the children would get free pizza and soda, they erupted in cheers.
