Foxes and friends can now be found at Bayshore Pets.
Not the daytime TV hosts, but curious creatures with bright eyes and bushy tails.
As far as co-owner, Julie Avecedo, knows, Bayshore Pets is the only pet store in the Bradenton area that has them.
The pet store, 5722 14th St. W., has 9-week-old red and silver foxes for sale.
After taking over the store last December, Acevedo said she and her husband, Adrian, wanted to bring exotic pets back to Bradenton through their store, which mostly specializes in reptiles.
Red and Dexter have been at the store for just three weeks, but Acevedo said people come in just to see the pups. Red was named after the character Red Foreman from “That 70s Show,” and Dexter was named after the main character in the “Dexter” TV series.
“They’re right down the middle between cats and dogs,” Acevedo said of the foxes. They pounce like a cat, she said, but wag their tails like a dog.
Clint Faulconer, Acevedo’s son who has worked at the store for a month, said the foxes are like a baby, toddler, teenager, puppy and kitten all rolled into one. He said the fox pups came from a wholesaler in Miami.
Pet owners interested in owning foxes need to get a Class III license from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which takes four to six weeks. Reselling the animal requires a different Class III license.
Until they find a new home, Red and Dexter will split their time between the pet store and the Acevedo’s home.
