Pirates Charities issues nine Manatee grants
MANATEE -- Pirates Charities, the official philanthropic arm of the Pittsburgh Pirates, gave nine "Fields for Kids" matching grant Thursday. Organizations receiving grants will be recognized with a check presentation ceremony before the 6:30 p.m. game Saturday between the Bradenton Marauders and the Charlotte Stone Crabs at McKechnie Field.
Grant recipients include the Manatee Area Youth Soccer Organization, which supports 400 girls; Miss Manatee Softball Inc., which has more than 280 girls; Manatee High School Baseball program, which serves more than 40 boys; Manatee High School Key Club; Anna Maria Island Community Center; Beach Dawgs Baseball, which has more than 60 boys participating; Nolan Middle School; Braden River High School baseball team; and Braden River Little League.

Joe Gruters to speak to East Manatee GOP Club
BRADENTON -- The East Manatee Republican Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Peridia Golf and Country Club; 4950 Peridia Blvd., Bradenton.
Guest speaker will be Joe Gruters, candidate for the District 73 House seat and vice chairman of the Republican Party of Florida.

Bassoonist Fernando Traba featured in SCF recital
BRADENTON -- State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, will feature Fernando Traba, principal bassoon of the Sarasota Orchestra, in a recital at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, in Neel Performing Arts Center at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W.
A native of Mexico, Traba also has served as principal bassoon with all five major orchestras in Mexico City, as well as the Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias in Oviedo, Spain; the National Opera Orchestra in Lisbon, Portugal; and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico.
Traba, a music instructor at SCF, holds bachelor's and master's of music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and has done postgraduate work at the Juilliard School.
Traba will be accompanied by Jonathan Spivey on piano. He serves as organist at Church of the Palms in Sarasota.
General admission is $8; students and SCF employees, $4. Neel Performing Arts Center Box Office hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and one hour before each scheduled performance.
