MTI's Forbes named top instructor
BRADENTON -- Brian Forbes, an air conditioning, heating and refrigeration instructor at Manatee Technical Institute, has been named Best Instructor by The Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration News and the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute. The 15th annual contest drew 95 nominations.
Forbes, an instructor at Manatee Tech since 2010, owns Arcadia Air and Heat LLC and is co-owner of Family Air LLC.
Criteria included how well the instructor was rated by the nominees in a series of teaching elements.
"Mr. Forbes is making a difference in his students' lives," said Doug Wagner, director of MTI.
Monroe Memorial 5K Run/Walk set for Jan. 10
SARASOTA -- The second annual Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Siesta Key Beach.
Proceeds provide college scholarships for soccer players.
Participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items for the Mayor's Feed the Hungry Program.
Andrew Monroe was a stellar goalkeeper for Riverview High School who tragically died in an automobile accident March 13, 2011. The run/walk was established for the benefit of senior soccer players at Riverview High School. The event also supports the Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. This college scholarship is available to all Sarasota County soccer players.

Florida Highway Patrol targets erratic vehicles
MANATEE -- The Florida Highway Patrol is targeting aggressive cars and trucks in a safety campaign aimed at educating motorists on the dangers of aggressive driving when interacting with large trucks on the road.
The campaign runs through Dec. 18.
Tickets will be issued for following too closely, unsafe lane changes and speeding.
Manatee Forum Christmas exchange set for Tuesday
MANATEE -- The Manatee Forum, Republican Women Federated will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Pier 22 in Bradenton.
New officers will be inducted, $15 gift exchange conducted and socks or peanut butter donated to Manasota Operation Troop Support. Dinner is $20.
