Shelterbox stands by to aid victims of Pacific typhoon
LAKEWOOD RANCH -- ShelterBoxUSA is in "ready mode" to offer international disaster relief assistance with what may be the catastrophic aftermath of Super Typhoon Hagupit sweeping through the Philippines as early as Saturday.
ShelterBox, an international disaster-relief charity, provides emergency shelter and other supplies to help families recover and to rebuild their lives in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters or humanitarian crises.
The organization has responded to more than 240 disasters in 95 countries to date.

SunCoast Blood Bank holds inaugural Manatee event
BRADENTON -- First responders from Manatee County are helping SunCoast Blood Bank avert a blood shortage and encouraging residents to be holiday heroes this season by donating blood.
Law enforcement and firefighting agencies are joining forces for the first Manatee County Boots vs. Badges blood drive Dec. 13. The goal is to raise 100 units of blood during the friendly competition between the two agencies.
The event is taking place at Suncoast Behavioral Health Center, 4480 51st St. W., Bradenton, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Firefighters and law enforcement officers will go head to head to see who can encourage the most people to roll up their sleeves and donate. All donors will receive a $10 Walmart gift card.
