Halloween safety tips
Florida law enforcement officials have released safety tips for Halloween, including the Florida Highway Patrol tips for motorists:
Pay attention and remove distractions by turning off the radio and phone.
Costumes may impair a child's ability to detect approaching cars, which can prevent them from getting out of the roadway quickly. Be patient; slow down.
Never miss a local story.
Watch for trick-or-treaters who may suddenly dart into traffic from between parked cars.
While trick-or-treating with children, wear bright clothing and put reflective tape on costumes and goody bags to be seen by drivers.
Whenever possible, use sidewalk.
Remind children to never run out into the street or cross between parked cars.
Hold the hands of young children. Review pedestrian safety with teens if they trick-or-treat without supervision.
Sarasota County Sheriff's Office safety tips for Halloween include:
Trick-or-treat in groups.
Never allow small children to visit a door without a trusted adult.
Only approach well-lit homes where porch or exterior lights are on.
Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering.
Report all suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.
