MANATEE — Deputies Dan Durrance and Christopher Folds have been named Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Co-Deputies of the Month of August by Sheriff Brad Steube.
Durrance was driving on University Parkway when he came upon a crash where a car had rear-ended a truck and a plume of smoke was rising. Durrance found a woman unconscious in the front seat, pinned under the dashboard with the engine compartment on fire. A man had already been dragged from the vehicle.
Folds arrived and he and Durrance began to throw tiles from a pallet from the truck blocking the passenger door of the car where the woman was trapped. As the fire moved into the passenger area, they worked feverishly to free the woman while trying to suppress the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Folds ripped the car door from the frame just as the passenger compartment filled with flames. Durance and Folds were finally able to pull the woman from the car to safety.
“For their quick response and heroic actions that saved a life, Deputies Dan Durrance and Christopher Folds are awarded Deputy of the Month for August,” Steube said in a press release.— Herald staff reports
