A Manatee County boy battling leukemia got a special shout out from Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon on Friday night.
Maddon expressed his support for Matthew DeSantis at the start of his postgame press conference that aired on SUN Sports following the Rays' 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Tropicana Field. Maddon recently began wearing shirts in support of local charities and causes that are sent to him, and on Saturday night he donned a "Team Matthew" T-shirt.
DeSantis, 8, was diagnosed acute lymphocytic leukemia in September 2011.
"Thanks to Team Matthew from Bradenton for tonight’s T-shirt," Maddon later tweeted. "Matthew DiSantis (sic), we’re behind you."
Never miss a local story.
In February, DeSantis and his family were treated to a day of fun at Busch Gardens while nonprofit Special Spaces Tampa did a makeover of the boy's room at their Palmetto home. The makeover reflected DeSantis' love of baseball and included an autographed picture of Maddon.
