MANATEE -- Manatee County employees who were told they had to repay money they erroneously got in their paychecks received a reprieve Wednesday.
County Administrator Ed Hunzeker will cover the $11,922.06 cost of the error that resulted in overpayments to 25 workers, Hunzeker wrote in a memo to county commissioners.
"Rather than ask the impacted Parks Maintenance employees to pay for an error they did not make, I will be covering the cost through a deduction of my personal vacation time," wrote Hunzeker in a memo to county commissioners.
"The payroll issue has been resolved: Impacted employees will return to their original wages, and they will no longer have to pay back increases they received in error," wrote Hunzeker.

Donny Combs, one of the employees who was struggling to pay back an overpayment of more than $600, said he was happy with the county administrator's decision.
"I'm sure everybody's going to be pretty happy, and we can put this behind us," he said Wednesday.
Nick Azzara, the county's information outreach coordinator, said Hunzeker had just been going on vacation when the issue came up originally, and he addressed it this week as soon as he returned to work.
