MANATEE — The thermometer at the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport hit 96 degrees at 3:16 p.m. Sunday, tying the record for the all-time hottest June 29 for Bradenton and Sarasota.
“It also got that hot at the airport on June 29, 1998,” said Mike Gittinger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin.
The hottest temperature ever recorded for Bradenton and Sarasota at the National Weather Service’s airport weather station is 101, which was set twice, on July 23, 1971, and Aug. 1, 1972, Gittinger added.
Although Bradenton and Sarasota did not set a heat record Sunday, Fort Myers did. The mercury climbed to 97 Sunday, a high for June 29, Gittinger said. Fort Myers’ old record was 96 as well.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, the humidity was 63 percent at the airport, leading to a heat index of 104, Gittinger said.
