TRIAL BEGINS FOR FORMER OFFICER IN MIAMI ATV CRASHA South Florida jury is being asked to decide whether a former Miami Beach police officer committed a crime or simply used bad judgment when he struck and seriously injured two people walking on the beach while joy-riding on a police all-terrain vehicle. Prosecutors said in opening statements Monday at Derick Kuilan’s trial that he was drinking while on duty in July 2011 when he invited a woman at a South Beach nightclub bachelorette party to take a reckless ATV ride. Kuilan’s lawyer says the officer was negligent but did not commit a crime.
EXECUTION SET FOR MAN WHO KILLED 11-YEAR-OLDA man who kidnapped, raped and murdered his ex-girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter is scheduled to be executed July 10. Gov. Rick Scott signed the death warrant for Eddie Wayne Davis on Monday for murdering Kimberly Waters. Davis confessed to the crime after investigators found Kimberly’s blood on his boots and his DNA under the girl’s fingernails.

FLORIDA WOMAN RECOVERING FROM SHARK BITE TO LEGA South Florida woman is recovering after suffering an apparent shark bite in the Intracoastal Waterway off Fort Lauderdale. Broward Health Medical Center officials said 22-year-old Jessica Vaughn was resting comfortably Monday after undergoing a two-hour surgery a day earlier. Doctors say Vaughn is expected to be in a splint for several weeks.
JUROR FACES CONTEMPT CHARGE FOR FACEBOOK POSTINGA Palm Beach County juror faces up to six months in jail after posting comments on Facebook about a trial that he was helping decide despite a judge’s warnings not to do so. An attorney says two more jurors may face trail for making similar comments while serving on a panel hearing another trial.
