EGMONT KEY — An Anna Maria resident apparently drowned Saturday afternoon in in a boating accident off Egmont Key in Manatee County.
Attorney Henry West Hicks, 60, apparently tried to retrieve an anchor for the 27-foot Black Watch boat when he died of unknown causes 3 miles west of Anna Maria Island.
An autopsy by the Bradenton medical examiner will determine the cause of death, according to WFLA News Channel 8.
The North Carolina native specialized in real estate law in the Tampa Bay area for more than three decades. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976 and earned his law degree from Tulane University Law School in 1979.
After a stint as counsel for Uiterwyck Corp., an international shipping company, he hung up his own shingle in January 1981. He opened Titlemark of South Tampa in 2001.
Hicks was also an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University.
