MANATEE -- A 63-year-old Middletown, N.J., man suffered a "medical episode" while driving a vehicle at 11:07 a.m. Monday on State Road 70, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, and later died.
Arthur Dunne was driving a 2005 Ford Expedition east on SR 70 along with a 63-year-old female passenger, also from Middletown, when he lost control of the Ford and struck a Dodge Caravan just west of 197th Street East, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
FHP reported "due to an unknown medical event" Dunne crossed the center line and began to travel east on the westbound lanes of SR 70.
Dunne's passenger tried to grab the wheel and steer the vehicle back into the west lanes but was unable to control the vehicle, according to FHP.
A 74-year-old Ellenton woman driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan west on SR 70 reportedly saw the Ford coming and avoided a head-on collision by quickly steering left, but the Ford struck her vehicle on the right side.
Dunne was taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, but FHP does not specifically indicate he died there.
The Caravan driver had minor injuries as did the passenger in the Ford, according to FHP.
The Ford continued after impact onto a north grass shoulder and struck a tree while the Caravan rotated clockwise and ended up in the north grass shoulder, FHP reported.
