BRADENTON - A man is in custody after authorities say he assaulted his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, stole her car, and fled deputies at speeds reaching 100 mph on Sunday night.
Deputies captured Matthew Hochleutner, 23, after he crashed the car and tried to run away.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, Hochleutner ambushed his former girlfriend's new boyfriend at about 10 p.m. Sunday, when he quietly broke into her home in the 6000 block of 14th St. W. in Bradenton, then called to his ex, asking her to step outside to speak with him.
According to the sheriff's report:
The boyfriend went outside. At that point Hochleutner hit him repeatedly in the head with a large metal candleholder, knocking him to the ground and continuing to hit him. Hochleutner then stole the keys to his ex-girlfriend's Toyota Prius and sped away from the scene.
He drove to a Bank of America location and withdrew $200 with his ex's debit card, which was in the car.
Both Bradenton Police and sheriff's deputies responded. They chased him after being informed that Hochleutner may have been armed with a handgun and was potentially suicidal.
The chase headed northbound on 14th St. W. at speeds reaching 100 mph. Two deputies deployed tire-puncturing devices in the 5700 block of 14th St. The devices punctured the two front tires of the Prius. However, the chase continued at speeds of up to 90 mph.
The sheriff's report shows that Hochleutner drove into the parking lot of the Burgundy Apartments, then attempted a left-hand turn onto 3rd St. Court W. He lost control of the vehicle in the turn and crashed the Prius into a Cadillac SUV. He ran away from the scene. Police pursued with a K-9 unit. A helicopter was also deployed to search for the suspect.
Hochleutner made his way to the home of an acquaintance on 52nd Ave. Plaza W., according to the report. Sheriff's deputies arrested him at the address with no further incident.
Damage to the Prius was estimated by the sheriff's office at $10,000. Damage to the Cadillac is estimated at $2,000.
