ELLENTON — The novice pairs team of Cirinia Gillett and Maximiliano Fernandez from Ellenton have earned a silver medal this week at the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.
The pair scored 121.9 points in their short and long programs, which trailed gold medalists Ai Setoyama, 13, and David Botero, 21, who scored 129.18 points. A second team from Ellenton, Grace Knoop and Noah Chinault, finished 11th in the novice competition.
Gillett lives in Sarasota and Fernandez moved from Miami to the Ellenton area to team with Gillett.
The novice pairs are among 11 skaters from Ellenton competing in Boston this week.
Next up for Ellenton is the junior pair team of Alyssa McDougal and Paul Schatz who have their short program Wednesday and free skate Friday.
Competition in the pairs senior division, which will help decide the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team, begins with short programs Thursday and finishes with the free skate Saturday.
Ellenton is represented in the senior pairs division by Felicia Zhang and partner Nathan Bartholmay and Tarah Kayne and partner Daniel O’Shea.
Daniel Raad is trying for a spot on the senion men’s team. Raad’s short program is Friday and his free skate is Sunday.
