MANATEE — About $1 million Manatee County set aside to pay local doctors to treat uninsured patients is expected to be depleted by the end of the year, officials said Wednesday.
In the past, the money lasted eight or nine months of the year, but this year it is expected to be gone by Dec. 31, after only three months of the county’s fiscal year.
The situation is due to greater efficiencies in processing invoices, and limits on how much money is available, wrote County Administrator Ed Hunzeker in a memo last week.
“Our million dollars budgeted for next year will run out in December, so to me ... anybody who takes care of the indigent has no recourse to get paid anything,” said Manatee County Commissioner Carol Whitmore.
