BRADENTON -- After a leak in a joint of a pipe caused a washout Tuesday, Bradenton city officials have closed 18th Avenue West, between Freedom Village and 68th Street West for repairs.
A preliminary investigation suggested that a joint may have failed on a buried, 54-inch storm drain pipe, which crosses under the 6700 block of 18th Street West, according to Claude D. Tankersley, Bradenton's director of public works and utilities.
"This resulted in the undermining of the road base and the subsequent washout of an approximately 15-foot by 20-foot portion of 18th Avenue West, effectively making the road impassible," Tankersley said in a press release.
City officials barricaded the affected road segment, established detours and dispatched repair crews, it said.

The 6700 block of 18th Avenue West will remain closed from one to two weeks to allow repairs to the drainage system as well as the roadway, Tankersley said.
The area does not have driveway or cross-street connections, so no residences or businesses will lose access during the repair operations, he added.
