MANATEE -- Manatee County commissioners Tuesday informally agreed they would rather repair the Green Bridge Fishing Pier instead of demolish it.
The commissioners, meeting in a workshop session, were told the county might be able to assemble enough money from various sources to repair the corroded parts of the pier, so it might last decades into the future.
The pier, which juts into the Manatee River from Palmetto along the north bank of the Manatee River, is a popular fishing spot and recreational area.
It is a remnant dating to 1927 of the predecessor to the current Green Bridge.
Never miss a local story.
City of Palmetto officials concurred with the board's view, noting that a vibrant pedestrian-friendly spot like the pier fit nicely with their downtown redevelopment plans.
No formal decision was made, however, as the commission does not vote during work sessions.
