Roughly 400 people turned out Wednesday for a hearing about sites for a bridge crossing the Manatee River, most in favor of a Fort Hamer Road alternative.
Many in the crowd wore bright chartreuse shirts reading: “For our bridge,” referring to the Fort Hamer Road alternative named in a recently released draft environmental impact statement authored by the consulting firm URS.
Alicia Simat of Parrish told officials she suffered a cardiac emergency and, without a more direct bridge route, it took a half-hour to drive to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
She said quick access to hospital facilities is important, and urged a bridge be built as soon as practical.
The hearing adjourned after 30 people spoke.
