MANATEE — A local transition and work release center housing 120 female inmates has been notified it will close March 31, due to budget cuts.
The center, called the Bridges of America, employs 33 staff members that are facing layoffs, according to officials there who said they had been notified recently of the closing by corrections officials.
A similar men’s facility in Broward County that also contracts with the state Department of Corrections also faces closure, according to Raul S. Banasco, a facility director for the nonprofit, faith-based organization.
The expected savings from the closures are in the range of $500,000 to $600,000, said Felishia Dexter, the facility director for Bradenton's center at 2104 63rd Ave. E.
She said her center, which she described as a “therapeutic community,” operates on an annual budget of about $161,000 per year.
