BRADENTON -- Daniel Kanoff, a Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School student, has been awarded a National Merit Scholarship worth $2,500.
Kanoff is a senior interested in engineering. The 2,500 merit scholar winners were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Winners selected in each state were chosen because they have been judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
They were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. The scholarship can be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
FBA to hold bird house competition today
MANATEE COUNTY -- The Future Builders of America chapters at high schools in Manatee and Sarasota counties will host a “bird house competition” at Main Street in Lakewood Ranch from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
There are seven FBA chapters at high schools in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Students in the various chapters designed and built bird houses, and the top ones will be on display for the public to vote on the one it likes the best.

Oneco students to show off digital skills
BRADENTON -- Students at Oneco Elementary will show off their technological prowess when the school holds its third annual Digital Literacy and Technology Night at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Students are expected to showcase digital and technology-based projects like digital storytelling, ePortfolios, making music with GarageBand, video conferencing and Skype.
