One man was killed and another suffered serious injuries in a crash along U.S. 41 in Sarasota County on Tuesday morning.
An 88-year-old man driving a 2016 Acura was traveling north in the left lane on U.S. 41 around 8:43 a.m. Tuesday when the vehicle turned left at the intersection of Fields Road into the path of a 2017 Ferrari traveling south on U.S. 41, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Ferrari struck the right front of the Acura in the intersection. The Acura rotated and continued south until it stopped in the center and right lanes of southbound U.S. 41, according to FHP.
The Ferrari also rotated and went over the concrete curb and into a parking lot on the west side of U.S. 41, south of the intersection, where it stopped, according to FHP.
Possible charges are under investigation, according to FHP.
Stephen Witzer, the 71-year-old Sarasota man driving the Ferrari, died. The driver of the Acura was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital to be treated for serious injuries sustained in the crash.
The crash shut down southbound lanes of U.S. 41 Tuesday morning.
