An intimidating exchange of words between two drivers led to a hail of gunfire Sunday evening in Palmetto, but no injuries were reported, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.
Authorities said a 33-year-old man was driving home when he approached a traffic light on U.S. 41 shortly after 6:30 p.m. A light-colored Pontiac or Cadillac then pulled alongside him, and the driver rolled down his window and stated, “That’s my car,” authorities said. “No it’s not,” the other driver said.
According to the report, the suspect driver then said, “What you gonna do?” As the victim drove away, the suspect vehicle followed him to the area of Second Avenue East and 21st Street East.
Once on Second Avenue East, a passenger in the left rear passenger side of the suspect vehicle, which had multiple male passengers, began shooting at the victim’s vehicle, striking it three times, authorities said.
At least a dozen shots were fired, and deputies located 12 casings in the roadway. The victim was not injured.
The incident remains under investigation.
A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that the shooting took place in Bradenton.
