Lakewood Ranch resident and animal lover Maureen Flaherty just released her book “Foster: Saving the World One Pooch at a Time” on Sept. 13 — National Hug Your Hound Day.
Flaherty financed publication of the book in part through proceeds from the auction of the Brook Hill Dog, a chromist-made reproduction on metal tin after a painting by Alexander Pope. Flaherty discovered the illustration in 2015 at the opening of the Lakewood Ranch Goodwill.
She bought the piece from Goodwill for $43.50, and sold it at auction for $5,150. Half of the auction money went for design and production of the four-color book, and half went to pay for animal rescue medical bills.
“I wanted to encourage people to consider fostering. I thought if I could develop a really engaging book that showcased animal rescue and the many different options out there, people might give it a try. Even if you are in a living situation that does not allow you to foster, there are lots of great things you can do to help,” she said.
The book is available online at Amazon and major booksellers for $39.99.
Flaherty will be offering her book, published by Cooper & Rogers, at a $10 discount at SuperFoster.com and at book signings:
- 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at White Rose Interiors, 8141 Main St., Lakewood Ranch.
