EAST MANATEE -- The State Road 70 and Lockwood Ridge Road intersection continues to bustle with retail as two more projects are in development.
Benderson Development Co. is bringing a Poppo's Taqueria and an AT&T store at its Lockwood Commons shopping center, while across the street Aldi has plans to build a new grocery store on the northeast corner.
The Lockwood Commons shopping center is also constructing an Endurance House triathlon retail store on the south side of the center, the Herald previously reported. That store is expected to open in early January.
With locations in Anna Maria and West Bradenton, Poppo's Taqueria has signed a five-year lease for a 2,557-square-foot property in East Manatee. The third location is expected to open by mid-spring, according to Micheal Coleman, an operating partner.
"It's good spacing from where we are already," Coleman said. "Its got a great de
mographic profile around it. Just a good mix of business and residential."
The taco shop features organic and hormone-free food and has locations at 212 C Pine Ave., Anna Maria, and 6725 Manatee Ave., West Bradenton.
The East Manatee location will have its own feel but will be "thematically consistent" with the other locations, Coleman said. While The Colemans have experience in the construction industry, 390 Design in Sarasota will help with the interior design as they did with the West Bradenton location, Coleman said.
"We are using the same basic design scheme," he said. "We don't want any place to be cookie cutter."
Coleman said they were driven by the location and the opportunity when they decided to open the third location.
"People love our food," he said. "We are going to keep it simple and give more people access to it."
Aldi has filed for environmental permits with the Southwest Florida Water Management District to build a 17,000-square-foot grocery store at S.R. 70 and 45th Street East (Lockwood Ridge Road).
The 3.87 acres is owned by Route 70 Holdings LLC, managed by Sarasota residents Danielle Gladding and Joann Desrosiers.
Aldi, a sister company of Trader Joe's, sells groceries mainly with their own private labels that cost about half of what can be found in supermarkets. The stores have open carton displays and encourage customers to bring their own shopping bags. They require customers to rent a shopping cart for a quarter, which is refunded when the cart is returned.
Aldi has 1,300 stores in 32 states including one at 4705 Cortez Road W., West Bradenton.
Aldi did not respond to a request for comment.
