MANATEE -- The 14th Street Office Depot location will soon have a new home, but it won't move far.
Employees are telling customers the store is expected to open Oct. 1 in the former OfficeMax building across the street at 4026 14th St. W. Signs are advertising a moving sale outside the Office Depot property, 4301 14th St. W., as the Boca Raton-based retailer is analyzing its available real estate after it merged with OfficeMax.
"The overlapping retail footprint created by the merger of Office Depot and OfficeMax provides us a unique opportunity to consolidate and optimize our store portfolio, while maintaining the retail presence needed to serve our customers," Office Depot spokeswoman Julianne Embry said. "Based upon thoughtful analysis, which included a store-by-store evaluation, Office Depot Inc. announced this year that it plans to close approximately 400 stores in the U.S. over the next several years."
The company confirmed in an Aug. 5 earnings call it would close 165 locations by the end of the year.
"For competitive reasons we are not providing specific store location information or further details at this time," Embry said. "For those stores closing, we will do everything we can to help associates who may be impacted by providing eligible associates with a severance package and other company subsidized benefits. Also, where possible, we are working with our associates to identify open opportunities in our neighboring stores or in other areas within the company."
Office Depot also has a store at 4502 State Road 64 E. That location is not affected by the closure or moving announcements.
