Lowest gas prices in a decade on Labor Day
MANATEE -- Motorists in the southeastern United States should find the lowest Labor Day gas prices in a decade. The current state average prices of $2.31 in Florida and Georgia, and $2.17 in Tennessee are $1.06, $1.02, and $1.04 cheaper than the price during last year's holiday.
"Low gas prices are added incentive for Americans to take a road trip this Labor Day weekend," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Low gasoline prices are an added boost in disposable income, giving travelers more money to spend on lodging, shopping, and dining out."
Average retail gasoline prices in the Bradenton-Sarasota area have fallen 7.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.27 a gallon this week, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 308 gas outlets in the area.
Never miss a local story.
Local prices were 108.8 cents per gallon lower on Sunday than the same day one year ago and are 25.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, according to GasBuddy.
The current national average price of gasoline is $2.48 -- 12 cents lower than a week ago, 19 cents lower than a month ago, 95 cents lower than this time last year. The current Florida average price of $2.31 is 7 cents cheaper than last week, 23 cents cheaper than a month ago and $1.06 from a month ago, according to AAA.
Intertape Polymer reports 15 percent net income hike
SARASOTA -- Former Manatee County-based tape manufacturer Intertape Polymer Group is reporting a 15 percent jump in its net income before taxes for the second quarter of 2015.
The company, which moved its U.S. headquarters from Manatee County to Sarasota County in 2013, brought in total revenues for the three-month period ended June 30 of $196.6 million. That figure is up 4 percent from the first three months of the year, according to an Intertape press release. Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, were $27.1 million.
Publicly traded Intertape ramped up production at its new Blythewood, S.C., duct-tape facility during the quarter. It reported a "net negative impact on gross profit and adjusted EBITDA" of $1.3 million.
Intertape, which is also headquartered in Quebec, Ontario, has plans to produce masking tape in its South Carolina factory. The new factory is a relocation and modernization of the company's Columbia, S.C., manufacturing operation.
Android watch software to work with Apple's iPhones
IPhone users who don't want the new Apple Watch have a new option: Android devices.
The software that powers the Google-friendly smartwatches will integrate with Apple's iPhones through a new service, according to Jeff Chang, lead product manager for Android Wear. The new option enables an iPhone to pair with a smartwatch from LG Electronics Inc., along with those planned from Asustek Computer Inc. and Huawei Technologies Co.
Google is looking for new ways to make its Android Wear software more popular as it tries to woo customers from Apple, which released its watch earlier this year. In the second quarter, the Cupertino, California-based rival sold 3.6 million of the devices, or about two-thirds of smart wearables, while Android Wear took about 10 percent, according to Ramon Llamas, research manager for IDC's wearables team.
The new service for smartwatches with iPhones aims to use some of the most popular features from Android, including providing alerts for e-mails, calendar items and fitness updates. Also, with "Google Now," users can get tips on the status of a flight or weather forecasts. Yet it won't have some of the features available on other Android devices -- including Google's maps, third-party apps through the Google Play store and Wi-Fi connectivity.
