UNIVERSITY PARK -- Anthropologie, featuring a handcrafted look, is set to open Friday at The Mall at University Town Center.
Each Anthropologie store is designed to be unique and the UTC location has more than 6,000 square feet of sales space with a rustic modern feel. Elements include reclaimed wood beams and textured, plaster wall surfaces created by artisans. An abundance of natural light through a large window serves to highlight the features.
Anthropologie also employs full-time teams of visual artists at each location. They produce site-specific art installations for their store's windows and interior. The UTC store team dedicated more than 150 hours to the store windows, handcrafting birds, branches, wreathes and trees for "Birds of a Feather" themed scenes.
The store features women's apparel and accessories, home furnishings, gifts and décor from around the world.
To celebrate the opening, Anthropologie will hold an invite-only preview and shopping event Thursday evening. Ten percent of proceeds will benefit the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the state art museum of Florida.
The store will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For information, call 941-306-4513.

Port Manatee extends plan for container terminal
PORT MANATEE -- To keep its dream of a giant container yard alive, Port Manatee has filed to have a site plan for the project extended a few more years.
The planned 32-acre Southport Container Terminal is one-third complete. The port plans to build it out to its full extent to accommodate more cargo containers and bulk import and export items. George Isiminger, the port's planning and engineering director, said this is the second time the port has filed with Manatee County for an extension. State law enacted in the aftermath of the Great Recession allows ports with projects stalled during the economic downturn to extend theirsite plans with county planning departments, he said.
The port received $9 million in federal grants in 2010 to build the container yard. Since then, 10 acres have been paved and equipped with power and overhead lighting. About 1,000 shipping containers can be stored in the yard in its current form.
If granted, the extension for the site plan will be good for three years. Those wishing to comment on the site plan may do so by contacting the county planning department on or before Nov. 5.
