MANATEE -- Parrish's Jones Potato Farm has closed on a $6 million deal grabbing up about 600 acres near Piney Point.
The farm purchased five parcels from Real Property Holding -- Manatee County, a Shawnee Mission, Kan., company, land records show. The approximately 600 acres run along the 13000 Block of Grass Farm Road in Palmetto near Buckeye Road.
"We've been leasing quite a bit of land," said Kevin Jones, a member of the Jones family, which runs the farms. He said it was an attractive deal to start owning some of the farm land, which will be used for potatoes and green beans. In addition, a small area will be used for cattle.
The farm also closed Monday on a smaller deal worth $50,000, on land in the Piney Point area, according to land records. The seller was CSPR LTD, a company registered to Stuart Chin of Palmetto.
Jones Potato Farm grows a variety of potatoes in Parrish, green beans off of State Road 62 and citrus off of County Road 39 in Duette in addition to a cattle operation in Duette.
The deal was financed by a $6 million mortgage through Wells Fargo Bank, according to clerk records.
Real Property acquired the vacant land for $2.4 million through foreclosure in 2011, according to land records.
