UNIVERSITY PARK -- Luxury shoe retailer Stuart Weitzman is looking to step up the footwear selection at the Mall at University Town Center.
The retailer, known for selling shoes featuring unusual materials that can fetch $400, filed a building application Thursday with Sarasota County for a 1,600-square-foot store on the second level of the mall beside Brooks Brothers and near Saks Fifth Avenue.
This would be the sixth Stuart Weitzman store in Florida. The company also has a location inside International Plaza in Tampa, which is managed by Taubman Centers -- the leasing manager for the Mall at UTC.
Weitzman was raised in New York, but his passion for shoes can be traced to his father, Seymore Weitzman, who had his own shoe factory in Haverhill, Mass., in the 1950s.
The younger Weitzman has built his own shoe empire with celebrities and includes materials such as cork, 24-karat gold, wallpaper and vinyl.
Weitzman adds to a luxury lineup at the mall that includes Michael Kors, Calypso St. Barth, Edward Beiner, kate spade and Saks Fifth Avenue.
The 880,000-square-foot Mall at UTC will feature anchors Apple, Crate & Barrel, H&M, Dillard's, Macy's plus 100 stores and restaurants. The mall on Cattlemen Road and University Parkway is expected to open Oct. 16.
