EAST MANATEE -- Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches is planning to convert a former Hungry Howie's Pizza restaurant into a drive-thru sub shop.
Jimmy John's filed an application May 30 for a new standalone drive-thru location at 6923 State Road 70 East.
The location will be operated by Mark Mitchell of Mitchell Management Co. of Omaha, Neb. Mitchell owns 16 Jimmy John's restaurants, including locations in Sarasota, Clearwater and Port Charlotte, His most recent location opened on Clark Road in Sarasota.
"It's been fantastic for us," Mitchell said about working in the area. "Our people who work at the store have just been great. Our customers are really happy. It's a pleasure doing business in Sarasota and expect we find the same thing in Bradenton."
Never miss a local story.
The sub shop is expected to open in late August if approvals and weather cooperate.
The location would be the third Bradenton-area Jimmy John's. Franchise owner Tommy Venema operates the 5300 Manatee Ave. and 4338 Cortez Road locations.
The Manatee Avenue location that opened in January is the first standalone drive-thru location in Bradenton-Sarasota and the East Manatee location would make the second. While the exterior will be similar to the Manatee Avenue location, the dining room will have the chain's newest design with different seating, tables, colors and tile, Mitchell said.
"The light fixtures are very contemporary and also meet today's energy standards," he said.
The restaurant will also of
fer delivery and catering.
Manatee County staff are still reviewing the plans and have until Wednesday to complete comments. The plan is being administratively reviewed and does not need approval by the planning and county commissions.
Plans show the restaurant will be 2,073 square feet, while 1,073 square feet will be used for an office.
The office space will serve as a base for Mitchell's Tampa Bay area franchise operations.
The property is listed as owned by Hungry Howie's franchise owner Mark Caraher under the business name Midway Holdings II Inc.
The former Hungry Howie's had moved to the River Club Plaza, just east of Interstate 75 on State Route 70.
