UNIVERSITY PARK -- After buying land on Longboat Key, Michael Kors is making sure he has a store nearby for his designer handbags.
Michael Kors will be opening a boutique inside the Mall at University Town Center, according to a building application filed with Sarasota County.
Kors, whose net worth is valued around $1 billion, is known for designing luxury handbags that fetch hundreds of dollars.
Kors, born Karl Anderson Jr., purchased two lots on Gulf of Mexico Drive last year for $6 million with his husband Lance LaPere. Kors has a store inside the International Plaza in Tampa. Kors also has an outlet at the Ellenton Premium Outlets.
The Michael Kors store is adding to the luxury accessory lineup at the Mall at UTC that includes Brighton, Edward Benier and Vera Bradley that will join more than 100 stores like Dillard's, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Crate & Barrel and Apple.
The Mall at UTC, a joint venture between Taubman Centers and Benderson Development Co. is expected to open Oct. 16 on Cattlemen Road and University Parkway
