UNIVERSITY PARK -- Casual clothing company Gap is the latest store to lease space at the Mall at University Town Center.
Gap filed an application for building permits Tuesday with Sarasota County Planning & Development Services to come to the 880,000-square-foot mall. The mall, managed by Taubman Centers, is expected to open Oct. 16.
Gap was founded in 1969 in San Francisco and now has a global presence with brands that include Banana Republic, Old Navy, Intermix, Piperlime and Athleta. Gap maintains a store with a GapKids at the Westfield Southgate Mall and a Gap Factory Outlet at Ellenton Premium Outlets. Gap once had a store in DeSoto Square mall but left in 2009.
The retailer's construction costs at the Mall at UTC store are estimated at $600,000, according to a bid announcement.
Never miss a local story.
Gap is expected to join other clothing stores including American Eagle Outfitters, Brooks Brothers, Bebe, Macy's, Dillard's and Saks Fifth Avenue at the $315 million mall. The mall will boast more than 100 stores, including Apple Store, with half of them new to the Bradenton-Sarasota market.
