BRADENTON -- Developers of the proposed WaWa convenience store at 4465 S.R. 64 East have obtained a smaller, adjoining piece of property to the east and plan more retail space there.
Wednesday, members of the Bradenton Planning Commission recommended approval of amendments to the land-use and zoning maps to allow Belleair Development Group to build the additional retail.
Developers have not yet determined what type of retail would go into the new space, but Planning Director Tim Polk said he thought it would be three or four tenant spaces.
Annexation of the property into the city of Bradenton was approved in November.
Never miss a local story.
Belleair is planning to demolish a former Eckerd's drug store on the S.R. 64 property to build the WaWa.
Also planned by Belleair is the development of a second 6,000-square-foot store at the corner of First Street and Sixth Avenue West in Bradenton.
Polk told commissioners he has heard that Belleair is in the process of obtaining construction bids for the downtown store. The Herald previously reported the store would include 20 fueling stations.
In other business Wednesday, planning commissioners:
Recommended approval of a proposed Firkins Auto Sales repair facility at 109 26th Ave. W. The site was formerly used by the Manatee School District for storage of instructional facilities. The property is adjacent to Firkins Auto Sales.
The approval was recommended with a stipulation for security lighting at the rear of the building.
Recommended approval of a request by Widewater Bradenton LLC to allow alcohol sales and consumption at Hampton Inn & Suites, 309 10th St. W. The permit would allow wine and beer sales in the lobby area, and also clear the way for serving wine and beer at private events.
Without this license, Hampton Inn would be unable to have a function where alcohol was served, said Brady Woods, development services and zoning manager.
The Planning Commission recommendations are due to be presented to Bradenton City Council members Feb. 26.
