MANATEE -- When Teresa Moreland gets home at the end of a long day, she doesn't want to leave.
Not for groceries. Not for dog food. Certainly not for the gym.
That's why she developed Fit By My Design, a web-based platform that brings live online fitness classes right to customers' living rooms.
All of the classes listed on Moreland's site can be taken anywhere with an Internet connection: at home, at work, in a hotel room.
Moreland, 53, got the idea five years ago when she was teaching classes at local gyms.
"I thought, there's got to be a way to reach more peo
ple than what's in the room right now," she said.
By offering the classes online, Moreland could have millions of students taking one class.
So far, the Siesta Key resident has hired two instructors who will teach yoga and pilates, but is looking to hire dozens more from all over the world.
"They could teach online in their area and time zone," Moreland said. "You might want to take a class from someone who lives in China or Aruba."
Jamie Molnar, 34, will be teaching yoga from her home in Sarasota. The online format, she said, would help her grow her audience.
"So many people are doing online yoga classes because they're accessible from anywhere," said Molnar, also a mental health counselor at Ringling College of Art and Design. "The beauty of the online is that you're able to try it out in the comfort of your own home. You really get to reach more people through that online setting."
And for clients who prefer a face-to-face setting, Moreland is renting a space inside Lakewood Ranch Taekwondo Academy at 1845 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., where some online classes will be taught.
Moreland, a Christian, won't allow the teaching of risque material, and instructors must be fully clothed -- no cheeky shorts or midriffs.
"I'm a woman of integrity and I want my business to be of integrity," she said.
Classes come in several lengths and price points: $3 for a 15-minute class, $5 for 30 minutes, $8 for 45 minutes, $10 for an hour.
The low prices may not seem like much for a class of four or five students, but Moreland stresses the beauty of the Internet, how one class can be viewed by millions.
"I want potential instructors to grasp hold of the multiplication factor," she said.
