BRADENTON -- Darwin's Brewery is one step closer to opening after receiving unanimous approval for its alcohol beverage license Wednesday morning during the Bradenton City Council meeting.
Jason "JB" Taylor, project architect for Fawley-Bryant, said the next step is securing building permits.
"We are done with the city and are going to get permits," said Taylor. "They plan to have all of it done before spring training."
Owner William Cornelius and his son, Matthew Cornelius, could not attend the meeting, because they are at the great American Beer Festival in Colorado, however, they posted this status on their Facebook page: "Bradenton city council approved the brewery as we landed. Ready for construction!"
The license and a spe
cial use permit is to operate a light industrial brewery and lounge at 803 17th Ave. W.
They hope to open the microbrewery in March.
The Cornelius family already owns a Peruvian restaurant, Darwin's on Fourth in Sarasota, where they now sell their craft beer. The new brewery will allow them to increase production of the specialty beer. The 6,000-square-foot building will include a full-production microbrewery, tasting room, beer garden and outdoor music venue.
The owners are working with Fawley-Bryant Architects. Their representative, Taylor, is also chairman of the planning commission.
Taylor said the owners have invested for long term and so have other businesses coming to Bradenton's to form an entertainment district.
"That says a lot about what the business people are seeing about that district," said Taylor. "I want to see that as a true entertainment district. I think it will be a good thing for the city and the neighborhood."
The new Darwin's microbrewery will hold tasting events and social gatherings as is done in Sarasota, however, the tasting area will offer samplings of Darwin's signature brews while allowing patrons to observe the brewing process through a large glass windows.
