MANATEE -- Unemployment numbers in Manatee County for June show improvement from 2012, but a slight increase from a month ago, according to the latest job numbers released Friday morning.
Manatee's unemployment rate for June was 7.3 percent, and is not seasonally adjusted. A year ago, unemployment stood at 9 percent in Manatee, according to Suncoast Workforce, the region's job agency. May's unemployment rate was 6.9 percent.
The Sarasota/Manatee region had 21,794 residents without a job during June, out of the 303,979 people in the labor force, according to Suncoast Workforce.
Manatee's unemployment rate is slightly higher than the state average for June at 7.1 percent. The state's job numbers are down from the 8.8 percent rate from a year ago. The national unemployment rate for June is 7.6 percent.

In Manatee County Pierce Manufacturing completed its shutdown of an ambulance division, laying off the last of the employees. More than 250 Manatee School district employees were laid off at the end of the school year. Most jobs ended on June 30, although some non-contract positions may have been eliminated earlier in June.
Creonix also announced in June that it will move to Brooksville. The company will lay off at least 69 employees beginning Aug. 1

es in unemployment numbers don't offer a full picture about the job trends. Panuccio said year-over-year numbers offer a better picture of employment trends. Even quarterly numbers are more reliable and both are showing downward trends in unemployment as more companies announce they are moving to Forida and people are finding jobs.
During the last year, the Sarasota-Bradenton-North Port metro area gained 1,100 net jobs, mainly from retail chipping in 1,800 jobs. Most jobs lost over the last year include 900 jobs from the mining, logging and construction industry and another 800 from manufacturing, according to Suncoast Workforce.
