MANATEE -- Morning commuters coming from the island or Northwest Bradenton may soon be able to get their coffee fix again at a Dunkin Donuts on Manatee Avenue West.
Dunkin Brands Inc., the Canton, Mass.-based corporation that owns the Dunkin Donuts brand, has filed a site plan for 5601 Manatee Ave. W., where the Basil's Chicken and Ribs restaurant is now located.
"They plan on tearing down this building and building a new one," said Nick Malliaras, the owner of Basil's.
Repeated attempts to reach someone at Dunkin Brands went unanswered, but Malliaras said Dunkin Brands officials told him they are awaiting permits from Manatee County to begin work.
Never miss a local story.
Basil's will be moving down the street to Pebble Springs Plaza, 5917 Manatee Ave. W., in the unit where Jam Rocks restaurant-lounge was located, Malliaras said.
Jean Malliaras, Nick's wife, said they did not want to leave the area.
"We want to stay on Manatee Avenue," she said. "We're like family here and don't want to leave our loyal customers."
Nick Malliaras said he was approached about two years ago about putting a Dunkin Donuts at his location.
"We've been having discussions since than and finally reached an agreement," he said.
The Malliaras family has owned Basil's on Manatee Avenue since 1987 and have three other locations and looking to open another in Parrish.
They hope to have the new location at Pebble Springs Plaza opened soon after the deal with Dunkin Donuts is finalized.
Having a Dunkin Donuts on Manatee Avenue West will be a bit of deja vu.
Less than five years ago, there was a Dunkin Donuts right next to Basil's, but then-franchise owner Stan Furash was embroiled in a lawsuit with Dunkin Donuts over that store and one at 57th Avenue West and U.S. 41, according to Herald archives.
Both stores were closed. Eventually both buildings were torn down and replaced with a Salem's Gyros and Subs.
This year, a Tampa company, Velocity Brands Inc., opened a Dunkin Donuts franchise at 5235 14th St. W., about four blocks north of the old location.
According to the site plan, the new building on Manatee Avenue West will be about the same size as the Basil's building, with the same parking configuration. There also will be drive-through window.
There are eight other Dunkin Donuts in Manatee County.
