MANATEE - Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam solidified his reputation as a supporter of the small farmer during an appearance in Manatee County today.
Putnam, in an appearance sponsored by the Manatee Chamber of Commerce, said a growing movement for communities to “buy local” when it comes to produce is a good economic move because it helps “add value” to fruits and vegetables.
“From a business standpoint, it makes a lot of sense,” Putnam said in response to a Manatee County resident’s question about how to promote the small, local farmer.
Putnam’s stance was a pleasant surprise for Ellen Teeter, the advocate of eating locally-grown produce who raised the topic at the end of Putnam’s appearance. Teeter, a longtime advocate of locally-grown produce, expected “big agriculture” would be the focus .
