Focusing on new and emerging filmmakers, the first Movieville International Film Festival takes place Friday through Sunday at Lakewood Ranch Cinemas.
“Submissions will be carefully vetted and independently judged. Priority will be given to Florida resident filmmakers especially those based in the north west region of Florida (Sarasota, Tampa/St. Pete and Orlando),” reads a statement sent by the festival.
“‘Through the Tunnel,’ which enjoyed a reception, screening and panel talk at the Sarasota Opera House last month as part of the Sarasota Film Festival, has been nominated for Best Documentary and Best Editing.
“Through the Tunnel” offers a powerful look at former all-black Lincoln Memorial High School in Palmetto and how its outstanding football team played a key role in the integration of the Manatee County public school system.
Never miss a local story.
The main sponsors of the Movieville International Film Festival are Sanborn Studios, LLC, the Sarasota Film Society and the Sarasota County Film & Television Office.
The opening Friday evening will have the two premiere movies exhibited at the Sarasota Film Society’s Lakewood Ranch Cinemas, with an opening cocktail party at 6 p.m.
Movieville will then continue at the same venue Saturday and Sunday with movies (including short features, documentaries, animation and full-length motion pictures) shown all day on two screens.
On Sunday, at 5.30 p.m. there will be a red carpet, gala awards event with live entertainment at the Polo Grill in Lakewood Ranch.
The Special FX Make-Up Workshop takes place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday and costs $5 to attend. Central Florida resident J. Larose, whose film credits include “Saw III,” “Saw IV” and “Insidious” will be the special guest.
Larose was in Bradenton last month to shoot the television pilot “Workers’ Comp,” which stars Morgan Fairchild.
