MANATEE -- Port Manatee officials met with County Administrator Ed Hunzeker today to discuss the Piney Point contamination and the fixes needed to prevent further contamination from leaking and to get the Berth 12 dredging project underway.
Commissioners are concerned that if the dredge project sits idle for very long that Great Lakes Dredging Company will pack up its equipment and move on to another project. If that happens, the port authority would have to spend money to bring the dredge back once dredging can begin again.
Hunzeker is expected to give a report to county commissioners at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Port Authority officials will also report on the dredging project as well as other issues surrounding the Piney Point contamination.
In addition, Charlie Hunsicker, director of the county’s natural resources department, will update commissioners on what the county is doing to monitor water quality and will also delineate the state’s responsibility, according to county spokesman Nick Azzara.
