MANATEE — A Sarasota woman is under investigation in a Manatee crash that took the life of a 21-year-old man Sunday in a wreck Florida Highway Patrol troopers believe may be alcohol-related, according to a FHP report.
FHP troopers say Henrique Romero Graf, of Sarasota, died at the scene of a 1:15 a.m. crash at U.S. 301 and Tallevast Road, after a 2002 Pontiac four-door plowed into the rear of his van.
Mary Zimmerman, 32, of Sarasota, remains under investigation as troopers have ruled the crash could be alcohol-related, according to FHP Lt. Chris Miller.
Miller said Zimmerman has not been arrested, but her blood was taken at the hospital after the crash and has been sent for laboratory for testing.
The FHP report said Zimmerman was driving south on U.S. 301 straddling both the left and right lanes of the road, and did not see Graf’s van driving in front her. The Pontiac slammed into the right rear of Graf’s van, sending it spinning onto a grass median, where the vehicle overturned.
“We are investigating the case, but the fact that the driver was straddling both lanes is a concern for us,” Miller said.
Troopers pronounced Graf dead at the scene, and Zimmerman was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Miller said charges are pending further investigation into the crash.
