MANATEE — The only record that may be broke today is for lowest voter turnout.

Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Bob Sweat said activity at the precinct polls has been really slow.

Voters in Bradenton are choosing between two candidates for city council seats in each of three wards.

And on Anna Maria Island, voters in each city are picking candidates for mayor in Bradenton Beach and city commission in Holmes Beach and Anna Maria.

Sweat said as of noon, 9.05 percent of the 29,065 eligible voters in Bradenton had cast ballots. That includes absentee ballots.

In Bradenton Beach, 19.4 percent of the 905 registered voters had taken the time to make their wishes know, identical to the turnout in Holmes Beach.

If there were prizes for civic participation, the 39.5 percent of the 1,349 register voters in Anna Maria would be leading in a landslide.

Polls close at 7 p.m. and final results are anticipated by 8:30 p.m., Sweat said.

“We’ve haven’t had any problems so far,” he said, “and we don’t anticipate any.”

Although there are not as many precincts opened during this election as when there is county-wide elections, it is just as busy at the supervisor of elections office.

“We have to jump through just as many hoops,” Sweat said, “but with less polls, there’s less to count.”
