The Manatee County Commission approved Tuesday spending $550,000 to design and build a community center in Myakka City. The commission had appropriated money to upgrade the historic Old School House for use as the community center in May 2008.
But the Myakka City Community Center board of directors decided sharing the space with the Myakka City Historical Society, which owns the historic building, was not a workable solution.
In July, the community center board asked the county to build a stand-alone building.
The community center will offer programs and services, such as before- and after-school child care, programs for teenagers and seniors, and library services.
Other area organizations would be able to use the building for meetings.
Commissioner Joe McClash got the other commissioners to agree to continue to work with the historical society in restoring the Old School House and to ask the Clerk of the Court to help find grant funding.
