MANATEE -- A Bayshore Windmill Village Mobile Home Park resident surrendered to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team negotiator and was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. today.
Gene R. Vashon, 76, had become agitated and made suicidal threats while making a complaint about a Sarasota nursing home during a phone call to the Attorney General’s office earlier today, according to a sheriff’s office report.
During the call, he stated he would shoot the police if they responded to his home, the report adds.
Deputies were sent to check on Vashon and his disabled ex-wife, who lives with him and is wheelchair-bound.
Vashon continued to threaten to shoot deputies, the report stated.
After extensive negotiations, Vashon left his house and surrendered, the report added. He was charged with resisting arrest with violence and was taken to Manatee County jail. No one was injured during the incident.
