TAMPA -- Tampa police have named a person of interest in the fatal shootings of teen siblings over the weekend.
Jeremi Brito, 13, died Monday at Tampa General Hospital. He and his 16-year-old sister, Kiara Brito, were the only ones home Sunday morning when they were shot in their house. Police said the teens were shot multiple times and that the home was targeted.
Late Monday afternoon, Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said detectives want to talk to 19-year-old Charles Stephan Waits in connection with the deaths.
“Detectives believe that he has information directly related to the homicides,” McElroy wrote in an email.
Later Monday, McElroy said detectives have booked Waits into the Hillsborough County Jail on possession of cocaine charges. He remains a person of interest in the shooting deaths, and will make his first appearance in court this morning.
Kiara was a junior at a high school in Tampa. Her friends told local media that she played on the school’s basketball team, took advanced placement classes and was a National Honor Society member. Jeremi was in middle school and loved riding his bike. They lived with their mother in a neighborhood near MacDill Air Force Base.
Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of those involved. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 873-8477 or the Tampa Police Department at (813) 231-6130.
