MANATEE -- A 20-year-old Palmetto man has been arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault with a firearm, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported.
The incident occurred about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 5400 block of 36th St. Court East, Ellenton, the sheriff's office said.
A victim drove to an apartment complex in the area. When he parked the car, Malcolm Xavier McAllister, 20, got into the backseat and held a gun to the back of the victim's head.
The suspect announced that the gun was loaded and demanded money, the sheriff's report said.
“I don’t have any money,” the victim answered, and turned his pockets inside out.
McAllister fled on foot towards one of the apartment buildings. The victim and another man from the apartments gave chase.
The suspect stopped and pointed his gun at the victims and said “don’t test me I am going to shoot all of you,” the sheriff's report said.
The victims watched the suspect run up the stairs of the building and enter an apartment.
Two apartment maintenance men also saw the suspect with a handgun as he entered the apartment .
Deputies conducted a "knock and talk" in which the occupants of the unit were asked to step outside.
The victims and maintenance men positively identified McAllister as the suspect. The tenant of apartment signed a waiver to search his apartment for the handgun.
One of the apartment guests said he saw the suspect go into the kitchen and put the gun in the stove. A search was completed and the loaded gun was found in the bottom drawer of the stove. A check revealed the handgunwas reported stolen.
McAllister was arrested and taken to jail without incident.
