BRADENTON -- Don’t expect to see dredges in Wares Creek anytime soon.
The project has been delayed again as Manatee County, the Army Corps of Engineers and the contractor work out details about where to dispose the dried dredge material from the creek. The contractor had hoped to use Piney Point to dump some of the material, but the Corps nixed the idea because of contamination in that area, said Emilio Gonzalez, an engineer with the federal agency.
Gonzalez said the Corps is still working out some final details with the county.
The Corps was set to sign the final contract with the dredging company last week, but because the details with the county have not been finalized, the contract will not be finalized before June 10.
Once the contract is signed, there is a 30-day notice of work, and some preliminary work must be done -- meaning that it is unlikely that actual dredging will begin before August, Gonzalez said.
